The Buddha knowing his time on earth was nearly to a close decided to journey to Kusinaga Apple Grove. On his way he arrived at the village of Pava where the son of the village goldsmith, Cunda, invited him to a meal of Sukarmaddava, or “boars delight” which was a meal of mushrooms..
Buddha asked that the Sukaramaddava only be served to him and the other food that had been prepared should be served to the other monks. He was not long into the meal when his was heard to instruct Cunda to bury the leftovers of the meal in the ground, as he did not think any person should digest the food. After the meal Cunda sat beside Buddha and Buddha taught him the Dharma and praised him for the meal.
The meal obviously was not good and The Buddha became sick from it, suffering from an attack of dysentery. He was able to bear the pain with considerable will and effort, but decided he should hurry to the Apple Grove and so with much discomfort he struggled on still six miles from his journeys end and eventually arrived at the apple grove just outside the town.
